Yanagi leads Hawaii at Cup

Hilo’s Pono Yanagi led Team Hawaii in the first round of the Junior America’s Cup on Tuesday, firing an even-par 72 in Dupont, Washington.

Hawaii was in 12th at 7-over 223. Yanagi, a Kamehameha junior, picked up steam on the back nine, making his third birdie on No. 10 before eagling the par-4 No. 11 to get back to par and tie for the 12th best round of the day on The Home Course.

Yanagi’s three teammates are all from Oahu: Remington Hirano (73), Evan Kawai (78) and Davis Lee (79).

Oki finishes play at juniors

Hilo’s Kailey Oki missed the cut at the U.S. Girls’ Junior, finishing the second round with a 20-over 91 in Augusta, Missouri.

Oki, set to start her freshman year at Waiakea, was 36-over at Boone Valley Golf Club. Oki finished third at a June qualifier at Mauna Lani and was originally an alternate. Oahu’s Allysha Mae Mateo, the medalist at the qualifier, also failed to reach match play after consecutive 78s.

UHH volleyball makes grade

The University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball team was honored Monday with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Awards.

The Vulcan volleyball squad posted a 3.39 team grade-point average at the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year. Four other Pacific West Conference schools also earned this honor (Azusa Pacific, California Baptist, Chaminade and Point Loma).

“It’s a remarkable accomplishment on many fronts to win this award,” UHH coach Gene Krieger said in a release.

“A special thank you goes out to our UHH professors, who are willing to work with our student-athletes to help them be successful,” Krieger said.

Waiakea girls volleyball tryouts

The Waiakea girls volleyball team is in the final week of summer open gym.

Strengthening and conditioning will be held from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at Waiakea, with weightlifting from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesday and 3-5 p.m. Friday. At 5 p.m. Friday, there will be a parent and players meeting to preregister for tryouts and to review tryout criteria and to answer questions.

Mandatory tryouts will be held from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Aug. 4. Check-in everyday will be at 2:30 p.m., and all players must have a current sports physical and a fill out registration form signed by parents and cleared by trainers. Players must be present everyday at the closed tryouts.

Players should wear volleyball attire; tights, navy blue or grey shirt and hair should be pulled back in a ponytail. Please bring extra shirt/jacket and a water bottle.

Waiakea cross-country tryouts set

For students interested in joining Waiakea’s cross-country team, the first official practice begins July 31 and tryouts end Aug. 11.

Meet at the the Waiakea track at 4:15 p.m., and a current physical is needed to participate.
